Rebex and Graece picked Sonja up in a susplan. It looked like a blue whale. The two lucky women had slept all night in a luxury hotel while Sonja swam on autopilot against the flow of a freezing river with half her brain switched off.

At least YuFu had been tricked into meeting them, and she could dry off and sleep another hour while they travelled to Bury to pick him up.

Trick

Head up and alert, Sonja pounced from the susplan when it reached Bury Knowle Park. Rebex’s eyes seemed to glow in anticipation as she scanned text within her airSphere. Graece’s gaze darted at undergrowth through the iron fence.

“Crap.” Rebex scowled. “It says we can’t take the susplan in.”

“Remember what Blayne said.” Graece tossed back her braids. “Act like we’re on his side.”

“He’ll come without a fight,” Sonja said.

“Okay. So we won’t be affected by his poisonous gas?” Rebex asked.

“You know your installations,” Sonja said.

“It’s just weird. No one’s ever attempted to gas me before.”

Graece squeezed Rebex’s shoulder. “Don’t worry.”

They stalked through the park.

With lightness in her chest, Sonja looked directly at the others and spoke telepathically. “Can you smell him like I can?”

“Yep.”

“Me too.”

Sonja hesitated. “Did Blayne say whether YuFu has a telepathy chip?”

“I don’t know,” Graece said.

“Me neither.”

“Dear,” Sonja said. “We’d better deactivate ours. Don’t want him knowing we’re cyborgs with other plans.”

“Good thinking,” Rebex said.

The silhouette of a man slumped against a tree trunk caught Sonja’s attention. He looked muscular with rounded shoulders.

Sonja tucked the front of her black wavy bob behind an ear. Even if he was strong with poisonous gas integration, nothing compared to their mechanical assemblies. Not that he was a threat when pretending to be his allies.

Rebex must’ve seen him too. “YuFu? Z’Das sent us to pick you up.”

As he swaggered over to them, his face was a shadow under a hood. He was Rebex’s height—tall for a Jerjen. He towered over Sonja and Graece.

Sonja suddenly had a keen awareness of her heartbeat. YuFu smelled good. She glanced away for a brief time; feigning interest in the sound of a hooting owl.

“Where are you taking me?”

“To a safe house in Shang Ye Sher,” Rebex said.

“To the Capital of Business again?” He sounded annoyed.

“Would you prefer we leave you to fend for yourself?” Graece asked.

Sonja kept quiet. She wasn’t a good liar.

“Why not Cheen?” he asked.

“Let’s talk about it in the susplan,” Sonja said. “Come on. The sooner we get you out of sight, the better.”
